Dr. Joselyn Rwebembera

Deputy Director and Investigator
Kampala, Uganda

Dr. Joselyn Rwebembera has been an investigator and leader with RRCU since its establishment in 2019. In 2024, she was appointed as Deputy Director by RRCU co-Directors, Dr. Okello and Dr. Beaton. As Deputy Director, Dr. Rwebembera supports strategic decision making and leads day-to-day operations of RRCU. Dr. Rwebembera is also a lead investigator on several RRCU projects, including the GOALIE Trial, GOAL-Post, and RESET.

Dr. Rwebembera was drawn to the field of RHD because of the passion of her mentor, Dr. Okello. Also, seeing the morbidity and mortality among children and young adults from a very preventable cause, which has been successfully controlled or nearly eradicated in other parts of the world birthed the desire to make a scientific contribution in her country, region, and potentially,  globally.

Dr. Rwebembera holds a Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery and a Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine both from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Mbarara, Uganda), and is working towards a PhD in economic evaluation in medical research from Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda). Dr. Rwebembera also trained as a Fellow in Adult Cardiology at the Uganda Heart Institute (Kampala, Uganda) and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Frontier Lifeline Hospital (Tamil Nadu, India). She is currently a consultant cardiologist at the Uganda Heart Institute.
