CAMPS

Case Managers and Peer Support Groups for Prophylaxis Adherence in Rheumatic Heart Disease

Late diagnosis of RHD is associated with high mortality at a young age, in part due to the missed opportunity to benefit from secondary antibiotic prophylaxis (SAP).

Will the support strategies case manager (ARM 2) and peer group + case manager (ARM 3) increase SAP adherence and reduce RHD progression in latent cases?

CAMPS will be a pragmatic randomized trial of 3 support strategies for RHD SAP, integrated into routine care. Following the principles of a ‘pragmatic trial’ our intervention is overlaid on the background of routine clinical practice with minimal protocol-related constraints.

If adherence to secondary prophylaxis to manage RHD is achieved, this program can be a model to improve outcomes of children effected by RHD in Uganda and around the world.

Community Education: Community sensitization events are being held throughout the district to educate members about the seriousness of sore throats and to encourage them to seek treatment for children.

Scientific Objectives:

  1. SAP adherence rates

  2. Explore differences in patient reported outcomes

Echo of Children

Our team performed echo screenings on X children in the Tororo District to determine the baseline level of RHD in the community. We will screen these children again at the conclusion of the project as a way to evaluate impact.

Ministry of Health Involvement

RESET is successful only because of its close partnership with the Ministry of Health, which has designed their own posters for the district to encourage sore throat treatment.

Training Healthcare Workers

Healthcare worker training and empowerment is a key part of our program. RESET runs on a train-the-trainer model, where RESET staff trains “head” nurses who return to regional clinics to train their colleagues.
