Dr. Emmy Okello

Dr. Emmy Okello is a co-founder of the RRCU and serves as a leading investigator and mentor on RRCU’s research projects, with over 100 publications and a growing team of 50 mentees. Dr. Okello directs RRCU’s strategy and oversees all regulatory and administrative aspects of the program’s Uganda-based project portfolio.
Dr. Okello became interested in studying RHD when he encountered a 16 year-old boy with stroke while working as a General Practitioner in rural Uganda.
Dr. Okello holds a Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Uganda), a Masters of Medicine in Internal Medicine from Wuhan University (China), and a Doctor of Philosophy from Makerere University (Uganda). Dr. Okello also trained in Cardiology at the Uganda Heart Institute and interventional cardiology at the Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Okello is an Associate Professor and Senior Consultant Cardiologist and heads the Department of Adult Cardiology at the Uganda Heart Institute.
